Blue, red and brown switches — what they actually sound like
The three switch families explained by mechanism rather than marketing, plus thock, creamy, clacky and what those words describe.
Mechanical keyboard switches are colour-coded, and the three colours you meet first — blue, red, brown — describe how the switch behaves rather than what it is made of. The colours came from Cherry and have been copied so widely that they now work as generic category names.
Two independent properties matter: whether the switch gives tactile resistance partway down, and whether it makes an audible click. Almost everything else follows from those two.
Blue — clicky and tactile
A blue switch has a two-piece slider. As you press, the upper part catches, then releases and slams down onto the lower part, producing a sharp, high-pitched click at the exact moment the keypress registers. You both hear and feel it.
Blues are loud. Genuinely loud — loud enough that shared offices and open video calls are a real problem, and loud enough that some people find them addictive for exactly that reason. Typists tend to love them; gamers often dislike them because the reset point sits above the click, which makes fast repeated presses feel unreliable.
Red — linear and quiet
A red switch has no bump and no click mechanism. The travel from top to bottom is a smooth, even slide with nothing happening on the way down. The only noise is mechanical: the stem bottoming out against the housing, and the keycap coming back up against the top.
That gives reds a duller, lower, more “thunk” character. They are the default choice for gaming, because a light linear switch is easy to press repeatedly, and a common choice for anyone typing near other people. The trade-off is that with no bump, there is nothing to tell you a key registered, so you tend to bottom out every key — which is why reds can end up noisier in practice than the specification suggests.
Brown — tactile without the click
A brown switch has a bump on the slider that you feel as resistance partway down, but no click mechanism. You get the feedback of a blue with roughly the sound level of a red. This is why browns are the standard recommendation for an office.
They are also the most argued-about family. The bump on many browns is subtle enough that enthusiasts call them “scratchy reds”, and the tactility varies enormously between manufacturers. If you like tactile feedback and find browns underwhelming, that is a very common reaction, not a failure of taste.
The vocabulary around the sound
- Clack — high and sharp. Thin plastic, a hollow case, a plate-mounted board. This is the classic blue-switch office keyboard.
- Thock — low, deep and cushioned. Comes from mass and damping rather than the switch itself: a heavy case, foam inside, thick keycaps. It is the sound most enthusiast builds are chasing.
- Creamy — smooth and rounded, with the high-frequency edge removed. Usually a lubricated linear switch.
- Ping — a metallic ring after the press, from the spring resonating inside the housing. Considered a defect and usually fixed with lubricant.
- Marble / poppy — the bright, rounded sound of certain lubricated switches in a well-damped case.
The important thing to understand is that most of what you hear is not the switch. Case material, mounting style, plate, foam, keycap thickness and desk surface all contribute at least as much. Two boards with identical switches can sound completely different.
Which one to pick
- Alone in a room and you want the feedback → blue.
- Gaming, or sharing the room → red.
- Office, or you cannot decide → brown.
- You want the deep enthusiast sound → any linear in a heavy, foam-filled case.

Frequently asked questions
Which switch is quietest?
A lubricated linear (red family) in a damped case. Silent variants go further by adding rubber dampers inside the switch itself, which removes most of the bottom-out noise at the cost of a slightly mushy feel.
What is the difference between tactile and clicky?
Tactile is what you feel — a bump partway through the press. Clicky is what you hear — a separate mechanism that makes a sharp noise. Blue switches are both; brown switches are tactile only; red switches are neither.
Does the keycap really change the sound?
Substantially. Thicker keycaps produce a lower, fuller sound than thin ones, and the material matters too. Keycaps and case damping usually account for more of the perceived sound than the switch choice does.
